STUART RIVER CROSSING

Project Type

Steel Girder Bridges

Location

Vanderhoof, BC

Surespan, through a joint venture with Nak’azdli Whut’en First Nation, designed, fabricated, and constructed a 235 m steel girder temporary access bridge with an 85.4 m clear span over the Stuart River to support construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline. To reduce environmental impacts, Surespan developed a segmental launch methodology that allowed the bridge to be built and launched incrementally, avoiding launch-bed trenching and reducing equipment access to the riverbanks. A timber deck system was used to minimize the risk of river contamination during eventual bridge removal. Surespan returned in 2022 to remove the crossing, and the superstructure spans were subsequently repurposed for temporary access on other projects.
