custom-built drill presses – so the rebar never took a hit.
Project Type
Bridge Rehabilitation
Location
Spuzzum, BC
Surespan rehabilitated the 487 m Alexandra Bridge on Highway 1, spanning the Fraser River and CN and CP rail lines. The project included a full deck rehabilitation and seismic upgrades to bring the structure up to modern engineering code requirements. The scope included deck surface replacement and widening, concrete pier and soffit repairs, bearing replacement, and other structural modifications, all while maintaining continuous single-lane alternating traffic. Rather than constructing a road over the rail tracks as originally anticipated, Surespan lowered an excavator by crane from the bridge deck to complete earthworks and rip-rap installation at one of the piers. Surespan also built custom pneumatic drill presses to strengthen existing concrete elements without damaging the reinforcing steel.
