TAFT CREEK BRIDGE REHABILITATION

Project Type

Bridge Rehabilitation

Location

Meziadin Junction, BC

Surespan rehabilitated the Taft Creek Bridge on Highway 37, replacing the existing 67 m timber deck and strengthening the existing steel stringers with new steel plates. More than 4,000 Nelson studs were welded to the stringers to accommodate a new, wider precast deck. The failing Pier 3 structure was replaced with new rock-socketed piles and a concrete pile cap, while the existing Pier 1 and 2 pile caps were strengthened and widened to accommodate the new deck. Single-lane alternating traffic was maintained throughout the two-phase construction, including continued passage of heavy mining equipment. The remote location presented additional challenges, with the nearest concrete supplier located five hours from the site.
